5.0 out of 5 Suprisingly good, 1st May 2009

Review By Susan Swan "Sue"

I am suprised by the negative reviews of this product. I first used this epliator with a feeling of nervousness. I sprayed the pre epilation spray on my leg and within seconds I began to feel a tingly numb sensation this meant that all though I could feel a slight nipping at my leg I did not feel the pain that I was expecting.

The inbuilt light was extremely useful for identifying fine hairs and the fact that this epilator is rechargeable is really handy when you are on the go.

I did not find the recharge time an issue as I usually only need to use this once a week, I put it on to charge as soon as I have used it and then it is ready for the next use.

I definately recommend this to anyone who is thinking of purchasing an eplilator for the first time. It is definately better than epilators that I have tried in the past.

3.0 out of 5 Legs are definitely touchably smooth, 18th April 2009

Review By Big Bertha (UK)

This epilator is bright pink and white, comes with a large cap for use on larger areas like legs and smaller cap for areas such as underarms and bikini line. It also has a cleaning brush, a stand for charging, a pink and white storage bag and a small bottle of Veet Comfort spray.

The epilator can be used either with the electric cord attached or it can be charged up and used without, though the leaflet does state it takes 14 hours for a full charge from empty which will give 40 minutes use.

There are two speeds, slower for finer hair and faster for more brittle hair or when you are more used to the sensation. It also has a light which is useful for seeing small, fine hairs.

You spray on the comfort spray, wait a few minutes for it to dry and start epilating. I found this epilator worked pretty well and was particularly good at removing very short hairs, leaving my legs feeling smooth. I found it quite difficult to get the angle right to do under my arms or the bikini area with this epilator using the smaller cap.

I tried the comfort spray under one of my arms before doing both and can't say I noticed much difference apart from a slight tingling, but to be honest I've been epilating for quite a while now and don't really feel much discomfort anyway.

Epilating hurts the first couple of times, but you do get used to it and the sensation does decrease with continued use.

If you're new to epilating be warned armpits are particularly painful the first time, but stick with it after a few times you'll hardly feel anything.

It helps if your hair isn't too long and trimming it short first is a good idea as is having a hot bath first as it opens your pores and makes hair removal easier. (You must dry yourself properly this epilator is not designed for use on wet skin)

One downside to epilation (and other forms of hair removal by the root) is ingrown hairs, you can minimise this by exfoliating regularly and there are many brands of lotion on the market that are designed to minimise ingrown hair.

* plus points

mains charger with stand

pretty good at catching smaller fine hairs

can be used with or without cord

* negative points

14 hours to charge fully for 40 minutes cordless use

small cap isn't really contoured enough for some areas

In summary; a pretty good epilator that on the whole works well. I already have the Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7781 Wet & Dry Rechargeable Body & Face Epilator which I have to admit I prefer as it has a lot more flexibility in the way of caps and heads, takes under an hour to fully charge and is also a shaver. It is however more expensive. For a cheaper alternative that works this one is pretty good for legs.

2.0 out of 5 Pfft, 23rd April 2009

Review By Anna (London)

Am suspicious of grown women who love the colour pink. I really love the colour pink. That's the only positive this mess of a thing has going for it. Actually, scratch that. Even the shade of pink they've used is an ugly one.

Where to start: the charging time is 14 hours. 14 hours! That's too long, by about 13 hours.

It feels plasticky in your hand. Like it's made of flexible cheap plastic - which I suspect it is.

It's hugely unwieldy given its width. Unless you have the hands of a basketball player, you'll struggle with this. I actually had a bit of cramp in my hand as I had to keep adjusting how I held it and had to grip it too tight to keep a hold of it.

It comes with a bottle of spray that's supposed to make epilating easier. It doesn't: no numbness whatsoever. Plus, it smells of lighter fluid that's past its sell by date. So if you're epilating for a date (14 hours beforehand, remember, and please know the smell will last that long), here's hoping you're going out with someone who likes to set fires.

The light that's supposed to show up "invisible" hairs is teeny and illuminates pretty much nothing. In any event, it certainly doesn't help you to get at the pesky wee ones.

When you actually epilate, it's really, really painful. Even with the ineffective spray, it's far more painful that the Braun 7781 which can be used wet. It left my skin really patchy and sore and it was very irritated the day after.

This epilator really isn't any better than waxing. Plus waxing won't have a gaggle of pyromaniacs trailing you down the road. And it doesn't leave you with hands cramped into claws. Or a limp. (Actually, this one doesn't leave you with a limp, either, but you can't be a pirate without one.) So while this is a bit cheaper, I honestly recommend you spend a little more on the Braun and stay a land-lubber, matey. Arr.

2.0 out of 5 Not wonderfully effective, 26th April 2009

Review By Lilly Penhaligon (United Kingdom)

I didn't mind the plasticky feel, the garish pink, the flimsiness of the bag that comes with it. But I did mind the fact that it is not terribly good at epilating!

I was excited to read that this model comes with a little light to highlight the 'invisible hairs' that might be left behind and to be honest, I quite like the light that it's fitted with. However the light becomes completely pointless considering that the epilator appears to have difficulty plucking the hairs that I CAN see perfectly well. Before readers jump in and wonder if I have cat-gut-tuff hair - I'm a seasoned waxer and have been for many years. The large majority of my legs are bald or balding and what is there is so weak it might even blow off in a strong breeze. The epilator that I have been using since Oct last year - a Braun product, gets my legs shiny smooth within a few minutes with relatively little fuss. THis Veet model appeared to need to go over the same spots 3 or 4 times before it would pluck out the targetted hairs. THis made the epilation process much more time-consuming, annoying and frankly a little more painful than I am used to. It seems to me that the rotating heads slow down when applied to skin to prevent nicking and damage, however it also prevents plucking of the hairs too.

The whole design of the epilator was extraordinarily bulky and unless you have the same hand shape as that sported by Lego people, then you will either get cramp very quickly or spend a long time faffing about trying new grips.

Because this epilator did not appear to do a clean sweep of the hair but required re-plucking over the same area, I did not even contemplate using it on the underarm or bikini areas - although it does come wiht a smaller head fitting if you are that brave.

Regarding the spray - I actually liked this. It reminded me of Vicks really - you spray it on and nanoseconds later your legs feel like they are encased in ice. I like to think it made a difference to the pain factor but that could just be psychological. A word of warning - you can only use the spray if you are plannign to be recluse for at least a day and half - even after showering, exfoliating and lotioning - the smell of camphor/Vicks stays very pungently with you for a while.

All in all, I was astonished to see the retail price for this item. If you had that kind of money to spend on epilating, then i would have to suggest investment in a better model - something from trusty old Braun.
